New Mexico House passes medical marijuana!
After intense efforts by Governor Richardson, New Mexico’s house has passed SB 523. As there were minor changes to the bill in the House, it will need to be ratified by the NM State Senate before it becomes law.
The new law will allow patients to use marijuana to alleviate the symptoms of many medical conditions, including cancer, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, certain spinal-cord injuries, epilepsy, HIV, AIDS, hospice care and other uses approved by the state Department of Health.
After the vote, Governor Richardson released this statement:
“This bill will provide much-needed relief for New Mexicans suffering from debilitating diseases while including the proper safeguards to prevent abuse. I am pleased that the Legislature did the right thing, reconsidered this important bill and supported a humane option for New Mexicans who endure some of the most painful diseases imaginable.”
The only change to the SB 523 was the addition of zoning restrictions that would prohibit marijuana distribution within 300 feet of a church, school, or day care facility. This change is not expected to affect the Senate’s vote.
Congratulations, New Mexico!
