The Vice-Grip: The Sociological Perspective of Moral Legislation in America 1900-1940
This work examines how and why a specific set of moral laws (enacted to conform society to the beliefs of the dominant group) came into effect in early 20th century America. This paper reviews existing sociological and historical texts to study the drug and alcohol prohibition movements. Using both materialistic and ideological theories, this paper concludes that these moral laws were, in part, a symptom of widespread class conflicts in America. The white, Protestant upper and middle classes faced challenges from the minority and Catholic underclasses, and in order to keep their power, they outlawed behaviors that were attributed to the minority groups.
