Marijuana and Islam: forgetting “Fancy’s Leaf”

Police in Istanbul, Turkey recently made an interesting raid.

hookah.jpg“They smashed their way into the home of the man newspapers have nicknamed “the junkie teacher” - Esrarc Hoca - a self-styled imam who interspersed his lessons on Islamic philosophy with some strong tokes on a lit joint and encouraged the young followers sitting around his living room to do likewise. He extolled the virtues of cannabis and said no one could make him stop - smoking was his duty to God.”

A joint-smoking imam might sound like a Danish cartoon character to some, but is his behavior really inconsistent with the teachings of Islam?

The reporter who took us inside Temple 420 is back with some insight into the land of hash and hookahs in his post Muslims and marijuana:

Generally in orthodox Islam, conservative scholars deem cannabis an intoxicant and therefore, according to the Hadith, it is classified as haram (as is coffee). The Hadith is the book of sayings of the Prophet Mohammed, which states: “If much intoxicates, then even a little is haram.” There are dissenting voices, however, who say that the word used in the Koran itself is khamr - which means “fermented grape” - and that this classification doesn’t cover use of marijuana. Liberal Muslims believe that opposition to cannabis on religious grounds in Islamic countries has in essence been based on narrow-minded dogma that seeks to regulate all private pleasure in the name of religion.

Certainly some Islamic countries are closely associated with dope smoking and cultivation (Afghanistan, Lebanon, Indonesia, Egypt and Morocco, for example) but its use is often for recreational purposes and largely takes place among the lower classes. In Turkey, while cannabis use is not tolerated by the police or state, there is a smoking culture and a well-known saying, helal ottur, gunah yoktur (”it’s a holy weed that carries no sin”).

The thought of a devout Muslim toking up may be at-odds with the modern perspective on the teachings of Islam, but that perspective has evolved over time.

Just as Americans have forgotten the importance of hemp to the Founding Fathers, so too have modern Muslims discounted the value of hemp in their cultural history.

In 1894, Joseph Campbell published this account of cannabis use among Islamic ascetics.

A Word from the Indian Hemp Drugs Commission

“To forbid or even seriously to restrict the use of so gracious an herb as hemp would cause widespread suffering and annoyance and to large bands of worshipped ascetics, deep-seated anger. It would rob the people of a solace in discomfort, of a cure in sickness, of a guardian whose gracious protection saves them from the attacks of evil influences, and whose mightly power makes the devotee of the Victorious, overcoming the demons of hunger and thirst, of panic, fear, of the glamour of Maya or matter, and of madness, able in rest to brood on the Eternal, till the Eternal, possessing him body and soul, frees him from the haunting of self and receives him into the Ocean of Being. These beliefs the Musalman devotee shares to the full. Like his Hindu brother, the Musalman fakir reveres bhang as the lengthener of life, the freer from the bonds of self. Bhang brings union with the Divine spirit. “We drank bhang and the mystery I am he grew plain. So grand a result, so tiny a sin.”

“In his devotion to bhang, with reverence, not with the worship, which is due to Allah alone, the North Indian Mussulman joins hynming to the praise of bhang. To the follower of the later religion of Islam the holy spirit in bhang is not the spirit of the Almighty, it is the spirit of the great prophet Khizr, or Elijah. That bhang should be sacred to Khizr is natural; Khizr is the patron saint of water. Still more, Khizr means green, the revered color of the cooling water of bhang. So the Urdu poet sings, “When I quaff fresh bhang I liken its color to the fresh light down of thy youthful beard.” The prophet Khizr, the green prophet, cries, “May the drink be pleasing to thee.” Nasir, the great North Indian Urdu poet, is loud in praises o his beloved Sabzi, ‘the Green One.’

Compared with bhang spirits are naught. Leave all things thou fool, drink bhang.

From its quickening the imagination, Mussulman poets honor bhang with the title Waraq al-Khayal, ‘Fancy’s Leaf.’ And the Makhazan or great Arab-Greek drug book records many other fond names for the drug. Bhang is the Joy-Giver, the Sky-Flier, the Heavenly-Guide, the Poor Man’s Heaven, the Soother of Grief.”

Australian Government warns, “Pot. It mightn’t kill you, but it could turn you into a dickhead.”

australian-flag.jpg

The Australian Government has a new campaign to keep kids away from marijuana.

No longer does marijuana make one a homicidal maniac. Now the message is a little more relaxed. “Pot. It mightn’t kill you, but it could turn you into a dickhead” will appear in magazines and on bus stops.

Other ads include a person in a black and white photo with the quote: “You’ve got great eyes, when they’re not bloodshot,” and “I’d lend you money, but you still owe me from last time.”

Australia is wasting $600,000 to warn students that marijuana will make them an untrustworthy, ugly jerk. In total, the government will spend over $1.3 million in “cannabis information.”

David McGrath from NSW Health said the campaign aimed to prevent people starting to smoke cannabis and to encourage regular users to stop smoking.

He said teenagers’ attitudes towards drug taking needed to be changed.

“It’s important to challenge their perceptions that drug use is normal and to change their perceptions that this will make them either cool or attractive,” he said. Source

When the government tells kids what it believes is “cool and attractive,” one thing is certain: kids will value the opposite. This campaign will make marijuana even cooler than it already is among the targeted age group.

Stoner Society is a chill new site

stonerchick1.jpgFor those times when you just want to kick back, there is a cool new site called Stoner Society(POTorNOT.com). It is like YouTube and Hot-or-Not combined, except everyone here is irie. Growers, ladies and smokers can upload their pics, videos, and stories or just kick back and surf.

The news section of the site is run by High Times editor-at-large and Stony Awards producer Steve Bloom by way of CelebStoner.com. So it’s not some crappy Google feed. Bloom is plugged in and always has a scoop. What a cool new way to check it.

The site is new, so there is not a lot of content yet. But while viewers are sending in their pics, the dudes at Stoner Society are lining up photo shoots with the Ganja Girls. In the meantime, you can win stuff by uploading. It’s definitely headed in the right direction and worth checking out for any stoner. By the way, the site is free. No hassles. No bullshit.

Is Willy Wonka making hashish candy?

wonkaweeder.jpg

Willy Wonka is alive and working in California. He is also pissed off at how weak and shitty-tasting most marijuana edibles are these days.

That is the best explanation we could come up with for the emergence of new “Shiva Candy.”

shivacandy.jpg

The first time we saw these little candies, we wondered how many we would have to eat to get a full dose of medicine. We also wondered why everyone was speaking of these candies as if they were manna. In one hour, the truth was revealed. Within two hours, we had deduced that Willy Wonka was a real man and that he was the only one who could have produced such compact compassion.

Shiva Candies are made of hashish instead of cannabis oil or butter. This allows a nice concentration of medicine in a tiny toffee. The use of hashish also avoids that plant material aftertaste so often found in medicinal edibles. Even the texture is great. And Shiva Candy is individually wrapped and sealed in a baggy - perfect for travel. At $8 a pop, they are a great value all around.

For those who wonder whether the name might be offensive to Hindus, don’t worry. This is not blasphemy the way ‘prerolled Jesus Joints’ might be. Shiva has a deep connection to cannabis.

Shiva and cannabis

Shiva is the oldest known godhead figure in the world. Devotees of Shiva sometimes meditate by drinking a milk and cannabis mixture prepared by priests (Bhang). Sadhus and other devotees endlessly walk around India searching for the spiritual oneness with Shiva. These Sadhus also smoke ‘Charas’ and ‘ganja’ from chillums.

It is widely accepted amongst Hindus that Shiva takes Bhang. What’s disputed is the consumption of it by ordinary mortals. Most Hindus do not know their ancestors used to take cannabis whenever they saw fit. Consumption of Bhang wasn’t always reserved for the Gods and holy days. In fact, not so long ago it was considered an insult to refuse Bhang. I believe this change occurred no earlier than 1900, after the Indian Hemp Commission’s report was released in the late 1800s.

Bhang is also considered a sister of the Mother Ganges (a holy river and a Goddess in India). There are many songs which start off: “Gang Bhang Dono Bhen Hai, Rehti Shivji Ki Sang. Charan Karne KI Gang Hai, Bhajan Karne Ki Bhang.” Roughly translated this means the Ganges and Bhang (cannabis) are sisters and both live in Shiva’s head. The water from the Ganges is poured over a Shivalingam (a form of Shiva in the guise of a phallus shaped black stone) at a Temple and Bhang is consumed by the devotee so they can mediate, be better able to sing hymns, achieve a blissful state and be like Shiva.

Another often forgotten subject is Soma. This is the Nectar of the Gods mentioned in one of the oldest Hindu scriptures, ‘The Rig Veda’. Soma is said to be cannabis in some writings but some people dismiss this idea. I think that Soma is just an ancient name for Bhang. Bhang is made using cannabis leaves and milk, almonds, rose water and various other items. Bhang is also used as a word to describe the actual cannabis plant in some parts of India. In short it appears that the ancient Vedic Hindus knew how to extract THC from the cannabis plant using milk. Soma is one of the oldest intoxicants known to man.

Many Hindus are unaware of the significance of cannabis to Shiva. They seem to know that Bhang was Holy and relevant to Shiva but a lot of people did not know that Bhang contained cannabis. Cannabis use is stigmatised by Hindu’s the world over but if you ask real priests in India about its position compared to alcohol they will tell you that cannabis and only cannabis is acceptable to a Hindu, and priests are only allowed Bhang and Ganja but not allowed alcohol.

Medical marijuana in Israel

israel.gif

The first time D. smoked marijuana, he decided to make it a family affair. His wife, cousin and grandson sat with him as the 75-year- old Tel Aviv native carefully tucked the leaves into a Jamaican-accented pipe and lit up.

“They left as soon as I started smoking. That was important, that is part of the rules,” said D. “I never thought, never in a thousand years, that I would be a marijuana-smoker… I also never knew what marijuana really did.”

One year ago, D.’s cancer resurfaced after a long period of remission. His doctor recommended aggressive chemotherapy that took a toll on his appetite.

“I was so dizzy, I felt really nauseated all the time. I lost a lot of weight and that was worse than anything else,” said D. His grandson, who was studying to become a pediatrician, told him about the benefits of medical marijuana and encouraged him to discuss it with his doctor.

“The first time I remember thinking, ‘This is not bad enough, the cancer? I will also become a drug addict the last years of my life? God forbid,’” said D. “I had to read a lot. And truly, my grandson convinced me a lot, before I could even talk to my doctor about the option.”

D. now credits marijuana with extending and improving the quality of his life. He grows the plants in a small room adjacent to the kitchen, watering them with the same canister that his wife has used for years to cultivate the lush tangerine and kumquat trees in their backyard. They like to argue about who is the better gardener.

According to Dr. Yehuda Baruch, the head of the Health Ministry unit which approves licenses for medical marijuana, there are currently 88 active licenses for cannabis. Marijuana was first prescribed here in the 1990s, and he estimates that since then it has been prescribed to more than 150 patients.

Baruch is not sure how many requests he receives each year, but said that roughly 40 percent of the people who apply for cannabis are approved.

“Many of the applications we get are not really legitimate. They are the applications of private people asking on their own behalf,” he said.

Several years ago, the Health Ministry established an application procedure for medical marijuana.

The unit in charge of fielding the applications only accepts requests from recognized doctors.
Chemotherapy, the AIDS cocktail, chronic pain, glaucoma and Crohn’s disease are currently ailments that qualify patients for marijuana. If the doctor is applying on the basis of one of those ailments, the application is generally approved as long as the patient has no criminal record. Occasionally, doctors will also apply for marijuana for the treatment of less serious ailments. In those cases, they must provide published medical research qualifying the use of marijuana as treatment.

“For the people that apply on their own behalf, most never try again through a doctor. Most are not serious,” Baruch said. “Of those that apply through a doctor, however, 80 percent are approved.”

medicalmarijuana.jpg

Once a patient is approved, he is given permission to grow up to 10 plants or possess up to 250 grams at a given time. He must notify the Health Ministry and the police of the exact location where the plants will be grown and consumed.

Growing or consuming the plants at just any address is illegal.

“One of the biggest problems facing us is the growing of the plants, the production. Many of the patients who receive permission for medical marijuana often don’t have the ability to grow the plants,” said Boaz Wachtal, a public health activist who has spent the past 15 years working on marijuana legislation.

On March 20, the Health Ministry’s panel for medical marijuana convened and approved one long-time grower for large-scale production. The Tel Aviv resident has provided approved patients with free cannabis for the past several years. The panel’s decision will enable the grower to cultivate high-grade, organically grown marijuana for medicinal purposes. However, there are several hurdles left to overcome.

“The issue is now with the police, who are dragging their feet [and] even once he gets approved, there is the problem of raising enough money to actually make it happen,” Wachtal said.
He is currently looking for donations, both here and abroad. In addition to the building and planting material, the greenhouse would need round-the-clock security and supervision.

Last month’s meeting to approve a grower is a “positive step,” said Baruch, although he stressed that drastic changes in the laws relating to medical use of marijuana were not needed and the current system met the demands of patients.

“I don’t think that it is so pressing for legislation for change on this. There is a lot of work being done on a political level. I am not a part of that,” he said. “Of course there is also always a need for improvement.”

Over the past decade, three MKs have introduced legislation to legalize marijuana possession. Two of them, Naomi Chazan and Roman Bronfman, were from the left-wing Meretz party. Last month, however, MK Aryeh Eldad, from the religious right-wing National Union-National Religious Party, also proposed a bill for legalization, marking a milestone in the slow crawl of religious/right-wing ideology toward marijuana legislation.

“We have had a lot of success convincing the right-wing and religious parties to support legalization,” said Michelle Levine, a spokeswoman for the Alei Yarok party which advocates legalizing marijuana. “We have already been assured that if the issue comes to a vote, the right-wing religious parties will vote in favor… A big part of our argument actually stems from the Torah and mentions of cannabis there.”

As activists such as Wachtal are working to create laws to allow for broader medical marijuana usage, debate over the use and efficiency of cannabis is being waged in international forums.

There are six other countries in which people can currently take marijuana for various ailments. In the Netherlands, meanwhile, the purchase and possession of small amounts of cannabis is legal, but cultivating and wholesaling it are not. Spain and Switzerland have decriminalized the consumption and home cultivation of cannabis, but buying or selling it remains illegal. In 2001, the UK announced that the possession of small quantities would not be prosecuted, but the drug remains illegal. In Canada, the drug is legal only for medical use, but its use is broadly tolerated. The situation is most complicated in the US, where certain states have legalized marijuana within restricted parameters, while others still prosecute its use as a criminal offense.

“Marijuana could be of a huge medical benefit to hundreds of people in Israel, but years and years of the US-adopted prohibitionist policy have created a lot of misconceptions,” said Wachtal.

“There are many people who could be applying, or at least exploring the medical benefits, but they do not because of the negative propaganda surrounding marijuana… Part of the problem is the perception of cannabis in general society.

People don’t know what it really is; they think that they are going to see flying pink elephants because of all the government propaganda.”
D. also thought that he would be having elaborate hallucinations while on cannabis. Instead, he said, he has only been feeling “happy and hungry.”

“I was scared, but also excited to maybe see these things. But I never see anything imaginary or fantastic. I just see the world as a happier place,” he said.

Kirsten Dunst loves marijuana

dunstgrass.jpg

Kirsten Dunst is a fan of marijuana and believes the world would be a better place if “everyone smoked weed.” The star admits to smoking marijuana and trying other drugs.

Dunst, 24, says, “I drink moderately, I’ve tried drugs. I do like weed. I have a different outlook on marijuana than America does. My best friend Sasha’s dad was Carl Sagan, the astronomer. He was the biggest pot smoker in the world and he was a genius.

“I’ve never been a major smoker, but I think America’s view on weed is ridiculous. I mean - are you kidding me? If everyone smoked weed, the world would be a better place. I’m not talking about being stoned all day, though. I think if it’s not used properly, it can hamper your creativity and close you up inside.” Source

Another Republican fights for marijuana

scflag.jpg

  • Bob Barr is working for the Marijuana Policy Project.
  • Dana Rohrabacher is working with Maurice Hinchey to demand that the feds stop targeting sick Americans.
  • And the only pro-marijuana candidate on the 2008 ticket is Republican Ron Paul.

Now Republican Sen. Bill Mescher of South Carolina joins a growing list of Republicans speaking out for medical marijuana.

HIGH HOPES

Pot. Weed. Herb. The sticky green. Call it what you want, but if one state lawmaker gets his way you might have a word for it that you may not have expected to hear in South Carolina— how about “legal.”

Republican Sen. Bill Mescher of the Lowcountry recently introduced a bill to the state legislature to amend title 44 of the 1976 code to say, “Certain qualifying patients may engage in the medical use of marijuana.” “There has never been a public poll on medical marijuana that was not positive,” the senator told City Paper in an interview this week. “The public wants it.”

mesher_copy.jpgMescher stopped counting the number of letters and e-mails that have flooded his office since he introduced the bill on the controversial cannabis and said only one of the first 105 was against it.

Trying to get this bill passed, he says, is something he should have done years ago. His goal for the ganja has roots that dig deep in the past.

Back in the early ‘80s the senator’s first wife suffered a painful death from lung cancer and during her chemotherapy, Mescher watched as she endured a slow and agonizing death— the kind of death he said people wouldn’t let dogs suffer.

What’s worse, he says, is that if medical marijuana had been legal, the horrible pain his wife went through might have been just a little less so.

Of course the use of prescription pot was— and still is— illegal in this state and if Mescher had acted on the advice of certain doctors it would have changed his title from lawmaker to lawbreaker.

“I should have gone out and got some for her then,” he said. “But I was in a high-profile job and if I had been caught buying marijuana it would have been rough for everybody involved… so I didn’t do it. And I’ve regretted that all my life.”

Senator Mescher is hopeful that his prescription pot bill, which is currently in the Senate’s Committee on Medical Affairs, will be assigned to a subcommittee in short order.

That’s where the public’s input is needed, he says, and those in the community will have a chance to lobby on behalf of the bill— something he encourages anyone to do who is interested. (City Paper will publicize the date of the subcommittee hearing as soon as it is scheduled.) “I think if we can fill that room when we have the subcommittee meeting it’s going to go fast,” he said.

“I have hopes that it’s got a good chance [of passing].” Then, if Mescher’s bill is puff, puff, passed it will make South Carolina the twelfth state in the nation to enact legislation to legalize the use of medicinal Mary Jane. “I just can’t believe a legislator— just because of some personal feelings— would keep someone from easing the pain,” he said about opposition to his bill that he believes will better the quality of life for the terminally ill or those with constant pain. “If you’ve ever seen anyone die a very painful death you’d say ‘By golly let’s try it’ and that’s my whole attitude.”

Of course Mescher understands the chronic is a controversial topic, especially in the Bible Belt, but this senator has what he calls “bulldog tenacity” and recalls the entire decade it took him to get tattooing regulated here— something he finally did just last year. He has once also passed a bill within three days. No stranger to introducing controversial bills, either, it isn’t Mescher’s first rodeo when it comes to going against the grain. Leaning back in the chair of his office on the State House grounds Wednesday, Jan. 24, the grey-haired senator, dressed in a dark suit and blue tie, folded his hands and smiled broadly. “I’m the guy who got ferrets legalized in South Carolina,” he said. “I tend to take on the interesting issues.” And about his new medical marijuana bill: “I’m going to plug ahead and hopefully we get something out of this.” And get something out of it he will, perhaps even a kind of closure to the wound that opened so many years ago. “Until I got in the Senate there was no way I could really do anything about it [legalizing medical marijuana],” he says. “But I’ve thought about it a lot and then my niece came down with breast cancer in Illinois and it triggered the whole thing again. I said ‘It’s time that we tried to do something about this.’” In 1978 New Mexico became the first state to legislate in favor of medical marijuana and 17 others subsequently followed, according to the St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture. (Many of those states later discontinued the governmental programs because of the excessive paperwork involved. Says Mescher, there are allegedly seven people alive today who still use marijuana under a government sanction.) Eleven states right now carry favorable legislation for medical marijuana, some of them reached by ballot measures and others passed through the state legislature.

Pot Policy

If Mescher’s bill is passed, a qualifying patient eligible for a registration card could not be arrested for possessing less than 1 ounce of marijuana or less than six plants. The patient also may not be discriminated against by an employer or otherwise for carrying a registration card.

The way the bill is currently written, the Department of Health and Environmental Control would oversee the issuing of registration cards, which would look similar to a driver’s license and use a current photograph along with an identification number, name and address of the patient and name of the qualified caregiver. A minor could receive a card only if OK’d by his or her parents. DHEC would not be allowed to disclose the names of cardholders, according to the law.

As for who provides the pot, Mescher doesn’t want it to be the state because he feels it will run up the cost and convolute the issue. Aware that the small number of people who oppose his bill believe that medical marijuana might be abused, Mescher says he’s willing to accept that.

Caregivers and patients should be the ones able to grow or obtain the stuff, he says, and not have to worry about the government regulating and taxing it. “I don’t want the government to have to set up a big bureaucracy. I want to make it as cheap and as simple as possible.”

The bill states that “No qualifying patient or caregiver who possesses a registry identification card issued pursuant to this chapter may be arrested, prosecuted, or penalized in any manner or be denied any right or privilege based upon the qualifying patient’s medical use of marijuana,” and no caregiver may be disciplined by a licensing board for prescribing marijuana for medical use as long as it follows certain criteria: cancer, glaucoma, or positive status for HIV/AIDS or the treatment of these conditions; or chronic or debilitating disease or medical condition or its treatment that produces one or more of the following: cachexia (loss of weight and muscle mass); severe or chronic pain; severe nausea; seizures, including epileptic seizures; severe or persistent muscle spasms, including spasms caused by spinal injury, multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease (inflammation of the digestive tract), Fibromyalgia (muscle, joint or bone pain); or “any other medical condition or treatment for a medical condition adopted by the department by rules.”

The bill also states that no one may drive under the influence of marijuana but a person cannot be penalized for failing a drug test after operating a vehicle.

Already the letters have been pouring in from folks throughout the state applauding the sensimilia senator for his courage to help make life for those living with pain or disease more tolerable.

One woman, an amputee from Georgetown who uses marijuana to ease chronic pain and says she couldn’t get by without it, told him she currently gets her supply from the schoolyard near her house. Another guy from Conway said he would have committed suicide years ago if it weren’t for weed.

“When someone says ‘I’ll commit suicide without marijuana’ I think you need to listen,” Mescher says.

The Reefer Republican

Medical marijuana concepts are largely thought of as a liberal or progressive idea with states like California, Vermont, Oregon and Colorado paving the hashish highway for pot reform laws.

For Mescher it’s a health issue and if it’s going to increase the value of life for those he represents then that philosophy should transcend partisan rules and party lines.

Some of his colleagues in the Republican Party think it’s funny that Mescher wants to legalize prescription pot but they also expect it.

“I have a reputation of doing things like that,” he says. “Running off to the sidelines and playing around over there. But I’ve been a Republican all my life because I think they have a better philosophy, but that doesn’t mean I adhere to their platform and that sort of thing. What I think the people I represent need done [I do]… it doesn’t bother me if someone doesn’t like it.”

To some people in the legislature the idea of legalizing marijuana is a joke. Mescher shakes his head as he recalls a fellow senator sending him an e-mail about his prescription pot bill that read ‘I’ll smoke on it.’ Some lawmakers he knows just don’t take it seriously— the mere thought of legalizing a drug with such a bad connotation is enough to make their bowties spin.

To them it’s not serious and Mescher wants them to understand that to him it is. “To me,” he says, “It’s deadly serious.” And though marijuana is mainly perceived harmful by a mostly ignorant cross-section of the seat-belted public whose major cities now fear trans fats and cigarette smoke in bus terminals, a nanny state that may bewell on the way to mandating regular teeth cleanings and permanent crash helmets, the ganja is widely known in the medical community to have— surprise!— medicinal benefits.

And according to the senator who’s trying to pass his bill like a freshly rolled doob, “I haven’t had a single doctor tell me it’s a bad idea.”

Besides, he says, “Marijuana I think would probably be one of the more benign medications that a doctor would prescribe but it’s not going to kill you.

In my opinion you can take it all day long and it’s not going to kill you. It might befuddle you a little bit at times but it’s not going to kill you; a lot of these drugs that these doctors give you will.”

But those doctors are in a pretty bad spot themselves right now. Big Brother plans on clogging their pipes no matter what the state law says.

“The Federal Government says this thing is illegal and we’re going to throw everyone in the hole who’s caught using it,” Mescher argues. “So here’s a doctor who thinks his patient might be benefited by this but in the back of his mind says, ‘If I got caught doing that I could lose my license.’ Now, few people are going to take the chance. That’s the problem we’re in with the Federal Government in there. But the other states are saying ‘The hell with Federal Government.’”

And what about doctors or people with registration cards who abuse their privilege? Well it’s just going to happen. The good outweighs the bad on this issue anyway, so deal with it.

“There’s not a single program that you can develop that someone isn’t going to scam,” Mescher says. “And they’ll do it to this, I accept that.

Somebody’s going to find a way to abuse it no matter what it is. So we take care of that. We accept that fact and go on.”

Pot in the Palmetto State

Looking at other states’ pot laws, the Palmetto State is pretty harsh on hash. Possession of less than 1 ounce of marijuana here is a misdemeanor that carries a maximum sentence of 30 days in jail and between $100 and $200 fine.

The sale or trafficking of anything less than 10 pounds is a felony with a maximum penalty of five years in jail and $5,000 and doubles if sold to a minor or done so within a half mile from a school, public park or playground.

Possession of paraphernalia is a civil citation that carriers no jail sentence and only a maximum $500 fine, according to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

As for now, Mescher is focused on getting the laws changed to protect users of marijuana for medical purposes only but he does believe that if pot was legalized across the board the crime rate would drop as would the number of people in prison.

Back in his office Mescher stands and smiles, “But that’s for another day,” he says.

If Democrats feel that marijuana is their political issue, they may be in for a rude awakening.

Misunderstanding Republicans

Republicans come in many stripes. The militant moralism of the Pat Robertson bunch may be a vocal faction, but they do not make up the bulk of the Grand Old Party. And although they have recently been drowned out by the shrill cries of the so-called “values voters,” libertarian Republicans are beginning to re-emerge as a force in the GOP.

If they believe that they are eventually going to lose the marijuana issue, libertarian-minded Republicans will begin to ask what they can get in return. And college-aged voters would be quite a prize. A principled stand on federalism would be a smart move as it would encourage young voters to vote Republican in the interests of medical marijuana, while reasserting the states’ rights that would give the religious right a glimmer of hope in their fight to overturn Roe v. Wade.

In order for the Dems to retain their advantage on this issue, they would have to speak out. But there is a serious lack of spine in the Democratic Party. Hillary is mum on marijuana. And Obama smoked it while he was blowing lines in college, but even he refuses to address the issue directly.

As long as Democratic Party leadership believes that marijuana reformers will always be with them, they will continue to take us for granted. They will continue their silence and their political cowardice. If the Republican trend continues, Democrats may eventually regret that decision.

Cops serve marijuana search warrant and find tomato plants

Cops in Pullman, Washington know a thing or two about profiling.

But that is all - just a thing or two.

PULLMAN, Wash. Guns drawn, police serving a marijuana search warrant at a Pullman apartment found green leafy plant material.

It just wasn’t the kind they normally find in residences in the college town.

It was tomato plants.

Eight officers entered the apartment where a landlord reported seeing possible drug growing paraphernalia, including a specialized plant growing lamp inside a closet. That gave police probable cause to get a search warrant last weekend.

Pullman Police Commander Chris Tennant says he empathizes with the three startled roommates. However, he says it’s the department’s duty to investigate all credible complaints of marijuana growing operations.

The growers in this case, however, knew a thing or two about timing.

They were smart enough to switch out their ladies before the keystone cops busted in. Nice work, brothers.
